The text I chose was Twilight, and I chose this because I read all of the novels in high school and really enjoyed them. When reading the adaptation of Twilight into a graphic novel, I didn't enjoy it at all. It almost sort of killed the entire story for me. I don't know if I felt this way because I am still a beginner with graphic novels, but I found the graphic novel version to be extremely confusing, and quite honestly, irritating to read. When I read the novels in high school, I found the books to be very enticing and exiting to read. I literally read all of the books in a span of two weeks, but even getting through twenty pages of the graphic novel adaptation was extremely difficult.
I thought that the adaptation was made for lazy readers or for readers who struggle to get through novels. I thought that the pictures were distracting and took away from the real meaning of the story, which were the words. When reading the novel, everything was left up for the imagination, and I found that to be very fun, and I was able to picture the scenes in my head. When reading the graphic novel, it left nothing up for imagination, and I thought the lack of words took away from what the actual novel had achieved. I would not recommend to someone looking to read twilight to read the adaptation because it kills the actual novel. If I had read the graphic novel first, I would have never read the actual novels later because I don't believe that the adaptation achieved what the novel had.
I do think that these texts are stepping stones for the real readings because they are condensed, shortened versions that leave out important details that the novel achieves. When reading the adaptation, I really felt like it was a children's book, and it was really irritating to read. I didn't feel intellectually involved in any shape or form. I'm sorry to those that did enjoy the adaptation, since I just sort of tore it apart, but it most certainly is not for me. Go Twilight!
