They are responsible for ensuring that the government doesn't take advantage of the people. They are fighting for ideas like censorship, animal abuse, child abuse, privacy and more memorable causes. After 911, security has increased to ensure that there will not be another terrorist attack, but anonymous is unhappy with the way it has invaded people's everyday lives, so they want to restore and ensure everyday people's right to privacy.
They adopted Guy Fawkes' mask as their symbol as a way to protect their identity and keep the focus on the cause and not the individual. Members of anonymous were worried that the government would come after them, so the mask was a way to ensure their members safety. The mask became widely adopted after the movie "V for Vendetta" came out in 2006. The mask symbolically represents the groups movement to end the government taking advantage of the people, just like Guy Fawkes was trying to do with the failed gun powder attempt.
There are many connections between V and the group anonymous, and the first one, which is that they both wear the same masks. They do this so that they can protect their identity, but also show that they are remaining as one to ensure that their ideas and efforts are seen as the main focus of their movement. They don't want an individual to be named a leader of the group or to take attention away from what is really important to them.
Hactivism is when an individual or group breaks into or hacks into a computer system for socially or politically motivated purposes. They wish to leak the secrets of banks and government to the people, so that the people can have that information and power, and they will be able to use that power in any way they see fit. They want the people to be informed, so they think that information is power.
This group is creating a chaotic society, or at least they wish to. They don't want anyone to be in control, and they want the people of the world to govern themselves. I think it is important to think about just how scary that really would be. There would be no police officers or anyone to protect you if something were to happen that threatens your life or safety. It kind of reminds me of survival of the fittest.
I think there are many things about anonymous that is fascinating, but the first thing is their ability to communicate information to one another without a leader. They are able to use the web and internet to gather people around a central theme and get them to come out and protest for their ideas. Another fascinating thing is their ability to use the internet to take down governments or other corrupt ways of life to restore faith in humanity. They are using the internet as a tool to fight those that are corrupt and living off of the backs of the poor, working people of the world. A final fascinating quality is their ability to have connections all over the world. They are not stuck fighting issues in just one place, but they are instead taking on the world together, and trying to solve the world's issues together and not separately.
I think that some of the fascinating things about anonymous are also the disturbing ones too. The first disturbing quality is their ability to use the internet and hack into people's or the government's computers. If they are able to hack governments and banks, then it would be really easy for them to hack people's computers, so there would be a huge invasion of privacy, which is what they are fighting for in the first place. A second disturbing quality would be their connections all over the world. If anonymous leaks your information, people will be able to recognize you and harass you all over the world. They can even leak your phone number, your personal records, or your home address and who is living in it with you. A final disturbing aspect would be their wish to have a world where the people govern themselves. There would be nobody to protect us from criminals in the world, and it seems like we would be going back in time in history. Not only would it be hard to catch a criminal or protect your safety, but if you were caught doing a crime, then it is up to the people to determine a punishment. It reminds me of people hanging each other for minor crimes in the middle of towns or sentencing people to death without a fair trail.
I think the members of anonymous are both good and bad. I know a couple people who are hacktivists within anonymous, and they will be the first people to tell you that there are all types of people within anonymous. Since they don't have a true leader, anyone is able to join the group, so there are both good people fighting for real issues and bad people who are going to abuse the power. With that being said, not all members of this group want a government with anarchy. That is the extremist people within the group, but obviously, they are the ones that are going to get the most attention within the media.
I chose this panel to compare to the video because i thought it had a lot of similarities. It talks about in the panels how V is explaining that nobody can kill him because he is not flesh and blood, but instead, the sight of him, stands for an idea, which nobody can make go away. That is what anonymous is about. They are willing for people to get arrested for their idea or even die, because even when that happens, their idea and philosophies will not go away, but will instead be carried on by the other members of the group. No matter how many times you shoot at an idea, it can never die or just simply go away. You can kill the person with the idea, but often times, there are no original ideas, so either there are followers of the idea or other people are thinking the same thing. I also chose this panel because V is extremely mysterious within this panel. I think it is important to point that out because the entire idea of anonymous is mysterious and people don't usually know much about it, but that they are being called internet terrorists. Anonymous openly will proclaim their ideas, but the true mysteries are the faces behind the masks, which we will never truly uncover all of them. At this point in time, anonymous is an idea and a movement, so there is no way to truly know who is supporting it and who is not supporting it, and without that information, we will never know who is behind the mask planning these attacks on the corrupt government, banks, and officials.
